Description
In Elif Shafak’s novel, « The Forty Rules of Love, » two parallel narratives unfold. One is set in the 13th century and centers around the encounters between the renowned poet Rumi and his spiritual guide, the whirling dervish Shams of Tabriz. The contemporary narrative follows Ella Rubenstein, a dissatisfied 40-year-old woman in an unhappy marriage, who becomes a reader for a literary agent. Her first assignment is to assess « Sweet Blasphemy, » a novel by Aziz Zahara, which delves into Shams’ role in transforming Rumi into a mystic, poet, and advocate of love. As Ella immerses herself in the tale, she discovers that Rumi’s story reflects her own, and that Zahara, much like Shams, has arrived to liberate her. The novel beautifully encapsulates Rumi’s timeless message of love and unity.
