Description
In 1923, a Lebanese author penned a poetic masterpiece in prose known as « The Prophet, » which has enjoyed unwavering success. Within this work, an imaginary figure, the Prophet, imparts spiritual doctrine through maxims and allegories, addressing deep human aspirations: self-discovery, faith, distinguishing between good and evil, and aspects of life such as friendship, marriage, and pleasure. Balancing metaphysical inquiries and an ode to beauty, the text retains its enigmatic and suggestive power. As described by the Syrian poet Adonis, Gibran aimed to « awaken within man all that surpasses him: love, joy, rebellion, freedom. » It’s a message of wisdom that only poetry, in its brilliance, can bring forth.
