Description

En juillet 1096, la chaleur était intense around Nicée’s walls. In the shaded gardens with blooming flowers, disconcerting news spread: a group consisting of knights, foot soldiers, as well as women and children, was marching towards Constantinople. It was said that they had cloth strips in the shape of crosses sewn onto their backs. They declared their intent to exterminate Muslims all the way to Jerusalem and they surged in their thousands. These were the « Franks. » They would remain in the Holy Land for two centuries, pillaging and massacring in the name of God. This barbaric incursion from the West into the heart of the Muslim world marked the beginning of a long period of decline and obscurantism. Even today, in Islamic lands, it is still felt as a violation.
